Radiologists face increasing expectations to communicate directly with patients, but few educational opportunities exist to help radiologists feel prepared and confident in their communication skills.  The specific skills required to effectively lead difficult conversations, while not taught in most radiology training programs, are key factors for the success and satisfaction of clinicians and patients alike. Moreover, they are essential to the successful transition to value-based, patient-centered care.  

Patients remember conversations, not medical information. 

Evidence-based studies show that effective communication and relationships with patients are associated with improved health care outcomes. This includes improvements in chronic illness outcomes and adherence to diagnostic and treatment plans and a decrease in length of hospital stays and medical error. Still, educational opportunities for clinicians to learn these critical communications skills are not widely available. PERCS-Radiology is the only program in radiology whose effectiveness has been validated for enhancing radiologists’ comfort communicating with patients. Since 2011, the program has been attended by hundreds of practicing radiologists, radiology trainees, technologists, nurses, and patient-advocates. 

This course will directly address clinician-patient communication and offer radiologists the opportunity to enhance their comfort and skills when having difficult conversations with patients about:

  • new, unexpected or difficult diagnoses
  • radiological errors
  • radiation safety

Led by experienced staff from the Institute for Professionalism & Ethical Practice (IPEP) and the Department of Radiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the goal of this course is to improve the communication skills and relational capabilities of health care providers through experiential learning opportunities related to difficult conversations in radiology.

Target Audience 

The educational content of this course is designed to enhance the practice of radiology physicians, residents and fellows, physician assistants, nurses practitioners, nurses, technicians, and patient advocates.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 
  1. describe challenges surrounding communication with patients about bad news, medical errors, and radiation risks
  2. identify communication strategies and relationship-building approaches for effective communication with patients about bad news, medical errors, and radiation risks
  3. define emerging standards and rationale for direct radiologist-to-patient communication about bad news, medical errors, and radiation risks
  4. demonstrate enhanced communication skills and relational capacities relative to difficult conversations in radiology
  5. apply practical processes within radiological practice for enhancing communication with patients around bad news, medical errors, and radiation risks
  6. formulate strategies for teaching communication skills to radiologists within learners’ own practice

Registration by credit card can be made by clicking the register button above. Registration by check (draft on a United States bank): please make payable to Boston Children’s Hospital and contact CME Department at to discuss payment. Telephone or fax registration is not accepted. Registration with cash payment is not permitted. Upon receipt of your paid registration, an email confirmation from the Boston Children’s office will be sent to you. Be sure to include an email address that you check frequently. Your email address is used for critical information, including registration confirmation, evaluation and certificate.

Fifty-percent (50%) refunds will be issued for all cancellations received prior to the start of the course. Refund requests must be received by postal mail, email or telephone. “No shows” are subject to the full course fee, and no refunds will be issued once the conference has started.

Note: A minimum of 14 participants is required to run this course.  In the event that the minimum number of participants is not enrolled two weeks prior to a scheduled workshop, we reserve the right to cancel the session.  Should a particular workshop be cancelled, the registration fee will be fully refunded.


In support of improving patient care, Boston Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.


Boston Children’s Hospital designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
