Shriners Children's- Boston-Management of the Pediatric Burn Patient 2023

Almost one-quarter (24%) of all burn injuries occur in children under the age of 15 and each day, over 300 children are treated in U.S. emergency departments for burn-related injuries. The recovery for a pediatric burn patient, regardless of severity, can be dependent on the initial care provided. 

This course will review the guidelines to assess and treat pediatric burn patients by outlining the “ABCDE” assessment method as the initial approach to caring for the pediatric burn patient. A complete review of the assessment of burn type, depth, and size will be provided to help determine the severity of a burn for the pediatric patient. Strategies to treat and prepare the pediatric patient for follow-up care will be addressed.  

Participants will gain an understanding of the recommended treatment courses for the management of various burns. The management of minor burn wounds requiring outpatient follow-up will be described. In addition, treatment of larger burns requiring ICU management will be reviewed. Case studies will provide an opportunity to apply the information learned and, a question and answer session will conclude the presentation. Providers who care for children in various settings will benefit from this comprehensive pediatric burn management course.

1. Utilize the “ABCDE” method in the initial evaluation of burn patients

3. Describe burn injuries in terms of etiology, size and depth
4. Review methods of fluid resuscitation calculations
5. Discuss the care of burn patients in mass casualty disasters
6. Describe the treatment course for the management minor and major burn injuries
