Date & Location
Saturday, April 30, 2016, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Boston Children's at Waltham, Waltham, MA

Overview

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED FOR THIS COURSE. PLEASE EMAIL THE CME DEPARTMENT TO GET ADDED TO WAITING LIST. cmedepartment@childrens.harvard.edu

This course will focus on health maintenance throughout the multiple stages of a dancer's career.

Pediatric dancers often struggle with strength and flexibility imbalances as growth and puberty progress, predisposing them to injury. Pre-professional dancers may struggle with eating disorders, bone health issues and experimentation with substance use and abuse to maintain weight. Health maintenance can be challenging for professional-level dancers through their child-bearing years and into middle age and elderly years with early osteoarthritis onset. This course will also highlight how to train dancers to prevent joint degeneration and maintain health and fitness.

Target audience

This course is designed for primary care physicians, physical therapists, dance instructors and athletic trainers, as well as parents and dancers.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to increase knowledge of:
  1. The unique issues surrounding pediatric dancers who are actively growing, pre-professional dancers including female athlete triad, substance use/abuse, and issues unique to professional dancers, including pregnancy, mental health and aging
  2. Training dancers to prevent degenerative joint disease and maintenance of bone health throughout the life span
  3. The multidisciplinary approach to the care of the dancer
  4. Regenerative medicine treatment modalities in dance medicine
  5. Dancer training and fitness to prevent dance injuries
