Specialties - Pediatrics, Primary Care
Professions - Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician, Physician Assistant, Student/Trainee

Overview

The 2021 Pediatric Cardiology Symposium for General Pediatrics: Focus on COVID-19 is designed to provide general pediatric practitioners with up-to-date information on COVID-19 illness in children, including multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Pediatric cardiovascular disease and common cardiac symptoms manifest differently and more prominently during the pandemic. Children with heart disease have faced new challenges in school and related to mental health.

The symposium will provide a cutting edge look at cardiac care during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will provide the most up-to-date knowledge regarding manifestations and management of COVID-19 related cardiac disease in children, as well as evolving guidelines on return to sports after infection.  Shifts observed in pediatric cardiovascular disease and common cardiac complaints during the pandemic will be explored, with emphasis on clinical management strategies, including through telehealth. Presenters will explain common school challenges for children with heart disease, impact from school system changes with COVID-19, and most effective ways to obtain services for the child.  Through a holistic lens, mental health challenges in children with heart disease will be discussed, as well as practicalities of mental health support for children.

Course Format
This live webinar will be presented via Zoom. Presented by faculty with expertise in COVID-19/MIS-C, preventive and general cardiology, rhythm abnormalities, education, and mental health for children with cardiac disease, the course format will include lectures and panel discussions.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be better able to:
  1. Identify MIS-C and begin initial work up and management.
  2. Differentiate which athletes require cardiac testing and clearance to return to play.
  3. Recognize the impact the pandemic has had on pediatric cardiovascular disease and ways to mitigate the effects, including through telehealth management.
  4. Differentiate between benign and concerning presentations of common cardiac complaints which have become more pronounced with the pandemic.
  5. Describe educational challenges cardiac patients face, amplified by the pandemic, and ways to advocate for families.
  6. Recognizing elevated anxiety rates in children with cardiac disease and means to assist patients and families.
