The Abraham Thall and Sadye Stone Thall Virtual Educational Symposium: Meeting the Psychosocial Needs of Pediatric Burn and Trauma Patients

The goal of this course is to provide attendees with tools to address both acute and long-term psychological and social needs of pediatric patients who have suffered physical or emotional  trauma.  Speakers from Shriners Children’s Boston will present from various backgrounds and will use their expertise in the field of pediatric burn care to establish short-term and long-term plans to support trauma patients during their recovery process.  

Providers who may care for a pediatric patient from the time of the initial injury through the recovery phase will benefit from this course by establishing multi-phase strategies to assist the patient with managing their trauma.  Specialists from Shriners Children’s Boston in psychology, child-life specialties, social work, physical therapy and nursing will address their interdisciplinary role to support the patient's needs.  An interdisciplinary collaborative approach is the cornerstone of supporting patients from the time of initial injury through community reintegration and beyond.   

Course Format

The course will be offered virtually with a live presentation and Q&A speaker panel at the end of the session.

1. Define trauma and medically based trauma
2. Define trauma-informed care
3. Describe the six principles of trauma informed patient and family care in a pediatric setting
4. Discuss two ways to implement principles of trauma informed care
5. Outline common stressors that children face while recovering from injuries
6. Understand ways that child life specialists and music therapists collaborate in supporting children as they recover from an injury
7. Outline ways that child life specialists and music therapists can promote positive coping skills for patients that they can then use both inside and outside of the hospital
8. Demonstrate the benefits of an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to supporting patients who have experienced traumatic injuries
