About Us

Boston Children's Hospital is accredited by Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education and designed to provide ongoing education for the healthcare team.

Boston Children’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program is an essential component of the hospital’s four mission-based pillars of Care, Research, Community and Teaching. We continue to build upon a strong and diverse educational foundation while remaining a global leader in pediatric care and research. In support of this foundation, Boston Children’s CME Department will offer many opportunities for the healthcare team to continue their professional development, education and training.

Our mission

Boston Children's Hospital’s mission is to provide the highest quality health care; enhance the health and well-being of children and families locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; be the leading source of pediatric research and discovery; and educate the next generation of leaders in child health.

In honor of this mission, Boston Children's will continue to be recognized locally, regionally, nationally and internationally as a premier provider of up-to-date health care education, technological advancements, and skills development to the health care team. Boston Children's will promote excellence in medical information to improve the quality of health care within and beyond the hospital setting.

CME commitment

The CME Department shall address the intellectual and practical needs of its learners by offering structured presentations of recent scientific advances and new clinical knowledge while creating innovative learning experiences that center upon interactive dialogue between learners and faculty. Boston Children's recognizes health care professionals as lifelong learners and strives to provide valuable pediatric opportunities through CE as well as other effective resources, e.g., fellowships, residencies and observerships. The educational content contained in our CME activities is planned in accordance with the ACCME’s Standards for Commercial Support – Standards to Ensure the Independence of CME Activities. Courses are planned to promote the dissemination of recent clinical and scientific advancements, clinical quality improvement (CQI), patient safety, medical leadership and the six core competencies:

  • patient care
  • medical knowledge
  • practice-based learning and improvement
  • interpersonal skills and communication
  • professionalism and systems-based practice

The ultimate goal is to provide further medical education to physicians and other health care professionals so they may practice high-quality patient care resulting in better outcomes.

Our history

Boston Children’s has a long history of continuing medical education (CME). All hospital departments offer CE internally for their staff as well as annual courses. These courses review the most recent information in given subspecialty fields, which are mostly targeted for practicing health care team members in comparable fields who are practicing in areas of the country where pediatric subspecialists are not available.

Boston Children’s Hospital continues to carry out its mission of providing pediatric training and education at the post-graduate level with a variety of educational outreach activities for internal, local, regional, national and international audiences. Our educational offerings:

  • attract more than 2,000 participants yearly, 9 percent internationally and 53 percent from states outside of Massachusetts
  • rate 37 percent superior to similar post-graduate courses
  • encourage actor-based learning
  • promote continuous learning with our 82 regular scheduled series
  • provide an online global educational platform, OPENPediatrics™, to promote sharing of knowledge about the care of ill children
  • teach to a wide array of practitioners via experiential learning with the Pediatric Simulator Program
