Date & Location
Saturday, May 4, 2019, 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM, Joseph B. Martin Center at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA

Overview

On May 4, 2019 the Heart Center at Boston Children’s Hospital will be hosting the inaugural Gearing Up! Approach to Physical Activity and Sport in Congenital Heart Disease course. Optimal recommendations for sports participation and physical activity promotion remain one of most  debated topics in cardiology. This course aims to demystify risk assessment and the science of exercise physiology for medical and athletic professionals, families, and patients. The goal is for attendees to walk away with the scientific and practical knowledge they need to develop action plans for congenital heart patients so they may engage in the highest level of safe activity.

For Medical Professionals

When making recommendations for physical activity and sports, it is crucial for health care providers to understand the principles of risk assessment and exercise physiology as they apply to the unique cardiac characteristics of children, adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease. This course will explore a pragmatic approach to develop recommendations to safely promote physical activity for congenital heart patients that are supported by the latest science and data for cardiovascular disease and exercise.

For Patients, Families, and Non-Healthcare Professionals

We know that exercise is good for us, but how do we know which activities are safe, how much is enough, and when might it be too much? This course aims to provide patients, families, and others involved in the care of congenital heart patients with knowledge and decision making tools needed to work with their healthcare providers to optimally participate in and enjoy physical activity and sports.

Target Audience

The unique combined format of this course is intended to educate healthcare clinicians, patients, caregivers, athletic and school personnel who are interested in learning more about the science and application of physical activity in congenital heart disease.

We encourage pediatricians, adult and pediatric cardiologists, advanced practitioners, allied health professionals, physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, patients, and families to attend the course.
