Overview

If you would like to register for this course, please e-mail cmedepartment@childrens.harvard.edu.

This course is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, residents [OB/GYN, pediatrics, and family practice], fellows [Pediatric Gynecology, Reproductive Medicine, Adolescent Medicine], reproductive ethicists, lawyers, and other professionals involved in the medical and surgical gynecologic care of patients with intersex traits (differences in sex development).  The format allows for maximum faculty/attendee dialogue through lectures as well as interactive discussions. It includes lectures with question-and-answer sessions, workshops and interactive panels. Faculty members will be available to respond to questions following presentations, and during the breaks. The goal is to enhance the reproductive health care of patients with intersex traits through improved understanding of applied reproductive ethics in this field and in adoption of innovations in both the medical and surgical care of these patients.  This course has been developed to address three core competency areas that are needed to best serve this patient population, understand the ethics of reproductive and sexual healthcare for this population, and advocate for patient needs:

1. Professionals will learn vocabulary and terminology about sex, gender and genitals, introductory intersex health, and specialty reproductive health care needs for these patients (Day 1, for those who would like clinical foundation).

2. Professionals will be able to describe the history of care provided to intersex patients and how this care relates to the care of patients who experience genital variations or undergo genital modifications as minors (e.g., transgender patients and those with a history of female genital cutting (FGC))

3. Professionals will demonstrate understanding of the reproductive ethics surrounding genital, gonadal and reproductive anatomy and medical interventions, and how this informs the care of patients with intersex traits as well as the laws and policies around intersex patients and their care. Professionals will also have the opportunity to hear the voices of the communities and their goals and desires for clinician knowledge and advocacy.

Objectives
  1. To improve understanding of the reproductive and sexual health needs of patients with diverse sex traits (also referred to as intersex traits or difference in sexual development), and how our clinical approaches are influenced by (or influence) the care of other patients with genital modifications including transgender patients and patients with a history of female genital cutting.
  2. To increase the ability of professionals to advocate for these patients both inside and outside the clinical space.
  3. To encourage engagement in ethical and research topics affecting intersex patients.
