Date & Location
Tuesday, March 28, 2023, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, Boston,

Overview

The Pediatric Environmental Health Center at Boston Children's Hospital and the New England Region Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) welcome health professionals to attend the monthly virtual Pediatric Environmental Health (PEH) Grand Rounds.

This Grand Rounds series will provide healthcare providers with state-of-the-science content on current topics in pediatric environmental health. Such information will fill in the knowledge gaps of practitioners, enabling them to effectively counsel families whose children face possible health issues due to environmental chemicals, toxins, and other insults. The PEH Grand Rounds will also educate on practice strategies for the biomonitoring of children at risk for specific exposures to environmental pollutants.

Course Format
This course will be Presented online via Zoom, optimizing virtual interactions between faculty and participants and facilitating interactive discussions.

Course Topic
The Intersection of Climate Change, Vector-Borne Diseaseand Reproductive Health

Speakers:
Wylie, MD MPH

There has been a global rise in infectious disease outbreaks and a notable tripling of vector-borne illnesses in concert with the warming climate. In this seminar, we will review the contribution of ongoing anthropogenic climate change to the emergence and resurgence of infectious diseases, focusing on vector-borne infections that are particularly harmful during pregnancy, such as Zika virus, malaria, and dengue virus. The burden of illness from these infections is not equally distributed across the globe; populations in the Global South disproportionately bear the brunt of these infections, yet whose daily activities contribute drastically less to ongoing climate change. We will also address how some infection control strategies, such as insecticide use for vector control, can also adversely impact reproductive health, requiring a careful balancing of both risks/benefits of disease and control strategies by policymakers, clinicians, and individuals.

A short Q&A will follow the presentation.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe how the intensifying climate change crisis has impacted the emergence of novel infections (Zika virus) and increased the reach of other infections (malaria, dengue) that negatively impact pregnancy and reproductive health.
  2. Review how these infections differentially impact populations around the globe with disproportionate impact on communities made poor.
  3. Understand complexity of how strategies used to control infections (e.g., vector control with insecticides) may also negatively impact reproductive health.
